Beth is England Team Coach!

For 2 weeks at the start of February, I was offered the opportunity of a lifetime, to be part of the England Athletics Team Coaching staff for an international series in Melbourne Australia.

The Nitro Athletics series was a new concept, based on market research, to raise the profile and level of public interest in the sports, and was a total transition from traditional athletics.

One of the first challenges was managing the transport of 16ft bags of pole vault poles from Heathrow to Melbourne, which itself was a mission, involving numerous security departments (and a few arguments) - however even with a change of plan at Bangkok it was mission complete and we were ready.

After a few days of jet lag recovery, it was competition time and 6 teams of 24 athletes went head to head: Australia, England, New Zealand, Japan, China & Usain Bolt's ALL STARS!

With races including the elimination mile (back markers pulled off the track each lap), a mixed hurdle relay, and various mixed medley / sprint events the series felt like a supped up school sports day, with a fantastic atmosphere!

Being responsible for the field event athletes across the 3 event series meant I was in charge of a whole different format of Pole Vault competition (just 4 jumps!), a mixed Long Jump event, and Javelin comps with target zones for bonus points!

The whole 'show' centered around Usain Bolt & his All star team, forming a fantastic rivalry against the Australian hosts.

After 15 years of coaching athletics, this was an absolutely amazing experience, and a real honour to be asked to be part of the England Team Coaching staff – hopefully one to be repeated!

Thanks must go to Sport Stevenage, having supported my coaching development long in advance of this opportunity!

Community Asset Fund

Sport England has launched a new funding programme to improve spaces in local communities. Sports clubs and community organisations will be able to apply for the fund, which is dedicated to enhancing spaces that give people the opportunity to be active. As such councils may wish to share this information with their local networks. As well as traditional sports facilities where people enjoy physical activity, there are thousands of outdoor spaces up and down the country – like canal towpaths, woodlands and open spaces – all with great potential to be used and enjoyed as part of an active lifestyle. To help with the development of ideas, there’s a new guide about the Community Asset Fund.

Not to be mist!

Hundreds of cyclists celebrated the end of summertime by clocking in for Stevenage & North Herts CTC's famous Emitremmus rides yesterday (Sunday 30 October).

Despite thick mist all day, the annual ride to 'Reverse Summertime' proved a big success as 338 riders headed off into the countryside on various bikes and trikes – having enjoyed the benefit of an extra hour in bed that morning after the clocks went back.

They were sent on their way from Fairlands Valley Park by Councillors John and Joan Lloyd, the Mayor and Mayoress of Stevenage.

Cyclists had a choice of a 100km run, with a time limit of eight hours, or a 'lite' version of 67km (about 40 miles). Refreshments were provided at the control points in Hare Street, Saffron Walden and Therfield. "We'd like to thank all participants and helpers for their fantastic efforts and support to make the day such a success," said Stevenage CTC secretary Jim Brown.

Now Saturdays go mornings. Now the clocks have changed the Saturday Starter afternoon rides from Fairlands Valley Park are shifting to the morning. These half day rides are free and ideal for newcomers, those wanting to enjoy riding with a group for the first time, returners to cycling and anyone who wants a relaxing chat along couple of hours on a bike. They will start from Costello's Cafe (SG2 0BL) by the lakes at 10.30a.m. every Saturday until the end of February. Every ride will have an accredited CTC leader and sweeper with a radio link so no-one gets left behind and there will be a refreshment stop. This Saturday the ride is with Tina to Woolmer Green and on 12th November it's with Jackie to Watton-at-Stone Stevenage CTC is part of Cycling UK. Their full programme is on www.stevenagectc.org.uk
