Ian Allinson grew up in Stevenage and was a pupil at Burydale Juniors before moving on to the Thomas Alleynes School in 1968. He played in local junior football with Bedwell Rangers but in 1974 he joined Colchester Utd as a schoolboy where he played for 9 years as a striker scoring 69 goals in 308 appearances. In 1983 Ian signed for Arsenal in what was then called the 1st Division, the Premiership of today. He played 106 times for Arsenal scoring 23 goals and was a part of the team that went on to win the League Cup in 1987 scoring against Tottenham in the semi-final. Ian then moved on in 1987 to Stoke and Luton before re-joining Colchester.
Retiring in 1990 Ian has managed several non league clubs including, Baldock, Harlow, Boreham Wood and Stotfold.
