Phil and Sarah Durham

Phil and Sarah Durham are a husband & wife Great Britain team effort.

Phil Durham was raised in Stevenage after being born in the only hospital near to Stevenage which was in Hitchin in 1972. He lived in Warwick Rd in the Chells area, moving to the Bedwell area in the late 90's. He went to the St.Michaels RC Secondary school from 1983 to 1988, which now no longer exists as it merged with the St.Angelas school in 1987 to become The John Henry Newman School, where he attended the sixth form.

Sarah Durham (née Spuffard) was born in London and moved to Stevenage in 1983 with her parents. Sarah attended what was then the Bedwell Secondary school (now known as The Marriotts School) where she was lucky enough to enjoy gymnastics along with also playing netball where she excelled, playing for county, district and had trials for England netball team.

They both worked in Stevenage for many years. They met in the year 2000 and were married in 2004. In 2010 they moved to a village named Everton near Sandy in Bedfordshire due to work. Their parents and other family members still reside in Stevenage along with many friends and they visit regularly.

In 2015 they got into the Dragon Boating sport through the St.Neots Dragon Boating team https://www.stneotsdbt.co.uk/ which are a long standing successful racing club. This took them all around the country competing at National Level.

Both Represented GBR in Dragonboating

Back in 2016 they were both selected to join the GBR Senior A Dragon Boating Squad to compete in the European Championships which were held in Rome, Laghetto dell'EUR from the 27th to 31st July 2016.

Sarah was selected as the drummer and played a key part by ensuring the team where encouraged to push themselves further and to ensure the paddlers maintained the required rate set by the front two paddlers who are the strokes. Phil paddled for the squad in all races of which there where many, covering distances of 200m, 500m, 2000m. Phil came home with a Bronze medal and Sarah came home with two Silvers and a Bronze.

They then both went on to be selected again to represent GBR as part of the Senior A squad for the second time to compete at the European Dragon Boating Championships in Brandenburg - Germany (August 2018).

They have also had the opportunity of competing with friends in Italy, racing with the Italian ASD Elliott Dragon Boating Team, competing in Venice at the ICF Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships in 2017. Sarah took charge of the helm this time and steered the team to victory winning a Gold Medal which made the news for team over in Italy.

Plans for the future

They are currently part of the Raging Dragons https://www.ragingdragons.co.uk/ team based in the Isle of Dogs in London and last season in 2018 the team won the Mixed League for the first time in the clubs history.

Sarah is now a Qualified Level 2 Dragon Boating Coach along with an Advanced Race helm and is hoping to help the National Premier League team this season bring back more medals and silverware. Phil meanwhile has also taken up Trail and Road running and has entered the Great Ouse Marathon 2019 so is currently in training for that.
