Sandra Reed

I was asked to train at Stevenage & North Herts Athletics Club at Ridlins End, after winning the District Schools 100m in my 1st year at Hitchin Girls School. And after that I never looked back. I trained at first twice a week and managed to win a number of County Championships over 100m and 200m. Then in 1982, I tried an extra training session a week and achieved 5th place in Inter Girls 200m at the English Schools Championships Birmingham, and was 2nd in the South of England Championships 200m in 25.6 seconds. In 1989, I finished 3rd in the Senior Womens South of England Champs 400m and was ranked 16th in the UK with a time of 54.21 seconds.
1990 was my real break through year, I had my first call up to represent Great Britain, competing at the Gateshead International Stadium against the then German Democratic Republic and Canada. I also won the South of England Champs and was ranked 9th in the UK 400m. I represented the Country over 15 times in total and in 1991, finished 1st in the UK Championships Senior Womens 400m in Cardiff and was ranked 7th in the UK over that distance. I ran bests of 24.0 (200m) and 52.75 (400m), both of which still stand as Stevenage & North Herts AC records to this day.
